The Dongfeng 4E diesel locomotive (DF4E) is one of the diesel locomotives used by Chinese railways. It was developed by Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock Factory in 1994 on the basis of Dongfeng 4B diesel locomotives. The successfully developed dual-engine reconnection 12-axle high-power diesel locomotive for mainline freight, with a nominal power of 5,400 horsepower, was the diesel locomotive with the largest traction power in China at that time. From 1994 to 1997, Sifang Factory produced a total of 16 sets of Dongfeng 4E locomotives, all of which were assigned to the Nanxiang Locomotive Depot of Shanghai Railway Administration, and were used to haul heavy-duty freight trains on the Shanghai-Nanjing Railway. However, with the emergence of Dongfeng 8B diesel locomotives, Gradually replace the original functions and tasks of the Dongfeng 4E locomotive. In 2002, all Dongfeng 4E locomotives were transformed from Qishuyan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Factory into ordinary Dongfeng 4B locomotives.
