PHOTO BARNSTAPLE TOWN RAILWAY STATION 1966 WAS THE FIRST STATION ON THE LINE FROM BARNSTAPLE JUNCTION TO ILFRACOMBE WAS THE INTERCHANGE POINT WITH THE NARROW-GAUGE LYNTON & BARNSTAPLE RAILWAY. THIS HAD CLOSED IN SEPTEMBER 1935 WHICH EXPLAINS THE LACK OF TRACKWORK ON THE LEFT-HAND SIDE OF THE PLATFORM. HOWEVER ON THE FAR SIDE THERE IS STILL A SINGLE TRACK AS THE LINE TO ILFRACOMBE DIDN'T CLOSE UNTIL OCTOBER 1970. THE LINE TO ILFRACOMBE HAD OPENED IN 1874 BUT THE TOWN STATION DIDN'T OPEN UNTIL 1898 WITH THE OPENING OF THE L&BR REPLACING BARNSTAPLE QUAY STATION WHICH WAS SITUATED ABOUT 125YDS BEFORE IT. THE SINGLE TRACK THROUGH THE TOWN STATION WAS DOUBLED ABOUT 500YDS BEYOND IT & REMAINED DOUBLE ALL THE WAY TO ILFRACOMBE. MARTIN TESTERPHOTO PAPER THICKNESS NORMAL PHOTOGRAPH THICKNESS
