The race tradition started on May 30, 1911 & was held for the 90th time in 2006 interrupted only by US involvement in two World Wars (1917-18 & 1942-45). In 1911 the total purse was $30,150 but in recent years it has been in excess of $10 million. The winning team's share is in excess of $1.5 million.
