19th Century Tibetan Thangka
Yamantaka or
Vajrabhairava Signed, MB411
This large Tibetan Thangka tapestry is hand- painted with
mineral paints on cotton or silk, depicting Yamantaka, who is known to be the
"Conqueror of the Lord of Death." This painting has great details and vibrant
colors in Orange, yellow, dark & light blue, green, and dark purple. The
verso has hand printed signature and an image. Thangkas are devotional
paintings displayed by Buddhist in their homes, temples, and monasteries.
Yamantaka
or Vajrabhairava is the “destroyer of death” deity of
Vajrayana Buddhism. Sometimes he is conceptualized as the “conqueror of the
lord of death”; of the several deities in the Buddhist pantheon named “Yamantaka” the most well-known, also called as Vajrabhairava belongs to the Annutatayoga Tantra class
of deities popular within the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism.
