•G S Holmes Prop•White & Gold

This demitasse cup and saucer were manufactured in France by C. Ahrenfeldt for Limoges for the Angelus Hotel and date to 1901-1903, when G.S. Holmes was the proprietor of this Los Angeles hotel.

Located at the intersection of Spring and Fourth streets, the Angelus Hotel, was built by G.S. Holmes and opened on December 27, 1901.  At the time, at eight stories it was advertised as the tallest building in the city.  In its early days, the hotel featured a Turkish-themed room, a bowling alley, billiards, a buffet and a hair salon.

The hotel was run by G.S. Holmes until around 1903 when it was sold to the Loomis Brothers and was razed in 1956.

The backstamp on the cup and saucer read:  “C AHRENFELDT Limoges for THE ANGELUS • G. S. Holmes Prop.”

Both the cup and saucer are in excellent condition with not chips, cracks, crazing, repairs, surface scratches or loss of gilding.
