The word “ikat” comes from the Indonesian language word, which means “to tie” or “to bind”. This term was introduced into European textile vocabulary back in the early 20th century when Dutch scholars began to study textile traditions of the East Indies archipelago (today Indonesia).

Ikat is now a generic English loanword used to describe the dye technique and the cloth itself regardless of where the fabric was produced or how it is patterned.
