Charles Sherwood Stratton (January 4, 1838 – July 15, 1883), better known by his stage name "General Tom Thumb", was an American Dwarf
who achieved great fame as a performer under Circus pioneer P.T Barnum. On his 21st birthday, he was 2 feet 10 inches (86 cm) tall.

In February 1863, P. T Barnum arranged for Charles to marry one of his other turns, Lavinia Warren, also a person of restricted growth.
Their wedding was eagerly anticipated and it featured on the front page of the New York Times on the days leading up to the event - even though
it was at the height of the civil war. Harpers magazine snapped up the wedding photographs for its cover which were taken in advance, 
and President Abraham Lincoln hosted their honeymoon party.
