Meys and fellow french photographer G.L. Arlaud largely developed and defined the outdoor nude study in early European photography with Meys producing a number of iconic and well known images. In 1930 a monograph of Meys' outdoors nudes entitled "Plein Air" was published in Paris and quickly sold out to a public that clamored for the artist's graceful art deco figure studies, often set against nature's rugged backdrops. FINE PHOTO GALLERIES is pleased to offer this original vintage 1920's photograph by the renowned French photographer Marcel Paul Meys. While he occasionally photographed landscapes and other subject matter, throughout his career Meys was primarily drawn to and specialized in female nude studies. In the 1920's Meys, increasingly inspired by the art deco movement, turned primarily to his outdoor nude studies which were often staged in remote locations against backdrops of beaches or rugged mountains and wilderness. He was considered a pioneer in the field and his nude studies were met with critical acclaim throughout Europe. In these nude studies Meys juxtaposed shapely fit models (beautiful French girls) with porcelain type skin against the rough natural elements. Mey's models often wore headbands and assumed poses that echoed the art deco "look" of the times - above all his pictures were always artistic and designed to radiate beauty. Due to demand and the success of his nude studies Meys developed a "multi media" traveling show where he exhibited his nudes throughout Europe to enthusiastic audiences utilizing a projection device with the pictures set to poetry which was read during the show.

During the 1920's photographers like Meys, G.L. Arlaud, Lucien Walery, Julian Mandel, Man Ray and Frantisek Drtikol were pioneering the photographic nude in Europe while at the same time photographers in America such as Albert Arthur Allen, Alfred Cheney Johnston, Xan Stark and Edwin Bower Hesser were doing the same an ocean away. In addition to his widely successful nude studies Meys was also an early pioneer of color photography process and most particularly the autochrome. Today the photographs of Paul Marcel Meys are held in museums and sought after by collectors worldwide. Please visit our Ebay Gallery and click on "Marcel Meys" for more of the highly collectible original work of this historically significant artist.
