This listing is for a CASS Co. TOYS WW2 Era Boeing B-17 Airplane U.S. Air Force 1944-1945 Wooden Toy 25" in very good vintage used condition. Extremely rare find. This toy was sold by Sears and other outlets starting in 1944 and into 1945 during WW2 as the demand for metal was so great that many children's toys were made of wood. This is one of those toys, made by the Cass Co from Athol, Massachusettes. Notice the new style USAF insignia with bars. The wings and tail surfaces are made of "Masonite" which further indicates how scarce materials were at that time. The fuselage is a solid block of wood. Has 4 metal propellers. It's official name was: "Giant Plane with four dummy motors". Although the plane is not a scale version of the B17, it shares enough attributes of the B17 that it is similar, namely the rudder profile, humped fuselage and wing shape. Production started in 1944 and ended in 1945, making these planes a very scarce find. Of the entire Cass wooden line, these planes are the hardest to find due to their inherent fragility. Plane is surprisingly intact for a 70 year old WW2 item. The main landing gear is complete with rubber tires and hubs; rubber tires show wear in the form of cracking and some deformity. There's a black line on the fuselage just ahead of the wings (see photos). All components are original and the plane is designed to be taking apart, which is how it will be shipped. All the red metal props spin, but a few are slightly misshapen, few very minor other play marks, nicks and or dis-coloring. Measures 21" long fuselage with a 25" wingspan. An excellent collection to a WW2 era toy collection; possibly among the last that will be made available on the market!
