The essays are divided into two parts, 'English' and 'Foreign', and encompass the Mitford sisters' nanny, 'Reading for Pleasure', a visit to Russia, Louis VI, 'Portrait of a French Country House', and the meaning of "chic". Many of the articles first appeared in papers and journals such as The Sunday Times, The Times, Horizon, New Stateman, and Encounter.
