This kit will assist you to retrofit steering wheel remote control switches to your MG ZR from VIN 704142, this includes the 2003 pre facelift ZR with both Lucas and Pektron alarm systems and the 2004 Model Year (facelift) models. The change point is the later type fuse box fitted under the steering column (see photo).

Earlier ZR requires a different wiring loom as the connectors are different, this is listed in my other items.

The MG ZR was never offered with this feature from the factory, however the wiring technology was shared with the Rover 25.

The wiring from the rear of the steering wheel to the radio comes in two sections; from the wheel to the fusebox area connector and from there to the radio head unit, it is this second section in the dashboard loom that is missing on MG ZR. To double check if you have the first section fitted, lift up the top steering column cowling and check for the white and pink wires fitted to the white six way connector (see photo).

This kit uses the correct original wiring connector contact pins and wiring colour coding as if it was a factory option. The wire length is over one metre which will allow installation following the original wiring loom route (see photo).

The rotary coupling which allows the electrical connections to the inside of the steering wheel such as the Airbag and horn has the spare capacity for the radio remote control switches.

You will have to source a new steering wheel with switches or carefully cut a hole into the side of the steering wheel to accept a remote switch set.

You will have to ensure that the radio is compatible with remote controls. In the case of aftermarket units a suitable interface may need to be purchased.

The original MG ZR had dealer fit Kenwood head units, early units had infra red remote controls only. It is possible to interface with these units but this can be a lengthy exercise due to sighting the transmitter eye in a suitable place etc. Later Kenwood head units had a single light blue with yellow tracer wire or a 3.5mm jack at the rear both designed to connect with a suitable interface. The original manual that came with the unit will inform you of this connection.

I will provide brief instructions as to which connector cavity locations are required, this will allow direct plug and play compatibility with some factory units (Iovox, SVDO and Blaupunkt see photos) and also if an aftermarket interface is needed it can be ordered for the period Rover model.

This kit is for the wiring only, as per the first photo.
