Archery. Original photograph by Frank A. Waugh. Landscape design, gardening, architecture. 1900s Image size is 14 x 10 ¾ inches; mounted; mat size is 19 ½ x 17 inches. Rare original photograph taken by Frank A. Waugh around mid- late 1900s. Titled in ink by Waugh at the lower right of the matting. Picturing a girl – Waugh’s daughter – in a traditional Native American costume, practicing archery, aiming at a target in a park or garden. The photograph is in a very good condition. Some chipping to corners and lower margin of the matting. Frank Albert Waugh (1869 – 1943) was a pioneer in the American landscape architecture whose career focused upon recreational uses of national forests, the production of a highly natural style of landscape design, and the implementation of ecology as a basis for choices in landscape design. His Book of Landscape Gardening has become a classic in its field. In 1902 he became the head of the agriculture division and founder of an undergraduate landscape gardening program at the Massachusetts Agricultural College (now the University of Massachusetts Amherst). For many years Waugh was in charge of the design and maintenance of the campus. An expert with the camera, he made a number of fine photographs, including landscape scenes, capturing fields, animals, cultivated gardens, wild flowers, and trees in their natural settings.
