 RARE GLASHUTTE Nº1 YEAR 1922

Very rare Glashütte Nº1 typewriter, manufactured in 1922 by Typewriter Industry Glashütte GmbH, in Glashütte, Germany.

Its design is due to Charles Steinhardt. This machine was manufactured for just two years, so its print run was very limited, with some 2,000 machines being manufactured and very few copies remaining today. Therein lies its rarity and therefore its price since few collectors will be able to have a copy in their windows.

The city of Glashütte, in the state of Saxony and a small town of just 4,500 inhabitants, was considered one of the centers of the German watch industry and enjoyed an international reputation thanks to the small local companies dedicated exclusively to this branch of the industry, a watchmaking school and the manufacture of "Glashütte watches". Inflation in the post-World War I years led to a massive drop in exports. This forced watchmaking companies to seek gainful employment for their idle precision mechanical systems. It was decided, following a municipal initiative , today we would say job creation measure, start making typewriters. The GmbH founded in 1922, of which individual companies (36 companies) were shareholders, produced the machine parts on their own. These were completely assembled in the joint venture, "Typewriter Industry Glashütte GmbH". When the introduction of the Reichsmark coin put an end to inflation and thus increased watch production again, typewriter production was discontinued in 1925.

Due to the small number of items produced, it is a truly rare typewriter. It is an office model weighing about 15 kilos, with a keyboard made up of four rows and a double shift key, decorated on the clipboard with the name Glashütte in gold letters and a beautiful coat of arms of the same city. In the shield we see two characters with a clock and a compass and set square, flanking the towers that represent the city and a shield with hammers and a sundial as a symbol of the watch industry of the city of Glashütte. The machine is kept in good condition and works properly. Collectible typewriter, rare piece.
