On August 18, 2020, the national postal operator will put into circulation a new artistic postage stamp "Iron Cross Medal", dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the events of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-1921 and the establishment of state awards of the Ukrainian People's Republic. The award of the Iron Cross is the first of the realized awards of the Ukrainian People's Republic, which was intended for awarding campaigns and battles from December 6, 1919 to May 6, 1920.
"Ukrposhta is constantly working to popularize the history of our state. After all, stamps are not only about paying for postal services, stamps are an appeal to history lessons, an attempt to better understand our past. Brands are also a powerful method of communication. Where else will you find millions of copies of art and information materials that are distributed throughout the territory of Ukraine, even in its most remote corners? In 2019 alone, Ukrposhta issued 88 stories of artistic postage stamps with a total circulation of almost 5 million copies. We are grateful to our partners for interesting initiatives and effective cooperation in the issue of postage stamps of Ukraine," said Oleksandr Pertsovsky, First Deputy General Director of Ukrposhta.
"The story of the Iron Cross stamp is very significant from a historical point of view. For a long time, the issue of state awards of the Ukrainian People's Republic remained unresolved. Only on October 19, 1920, the Order of Liberation and the Iron Cross were established by order of the Main Command of the Army, signed by Chief Otaman Simon Petlyura, and their statutes were also approved. However, due to unfavorable circumstances, it was possible to produce and award only the Iron Cross award. Therefore, it became the first of the realized UNR awards. We thank Ukrposhta and the Editorial and Artistic Council for supporting our initiative with Mykola Chmyr," Andrii Grechylo, a member of the State Awards and Heraldry Commission, the initiator of the postal issue, emphasized.
