Malouf's first novel Johnno is the semi-autobiographical tale of a young man growing up in Brisbane during World War II. It was adapted for the stage by La Boite Theatre in 2004. Johnno is a typical Australian who refuses to be typical. Seen through the eyes of the narrator, he is a figure of legendary proportions. His disorderly presence can disturb the staleness of gothic Brisbane, or destroy the tranquillity of a Greek landscape. But what is the truth about Johnno?
