Here is the most wonderful early Victorian Staved Salt Box not sure of the woods but could be sycamore and elm.

It could well be Scottish.

Salt was an expensive commodity and would have to be kept safe and dry, and these were often hung by the fireplace, on hand

when cooking over an open fire.

It stands 11" tall and has a hole in the backplate for hanging on a nail.  The hinge is a metal pin on each side of the lid.

A rare and beautiful item to be found in such a superb condition.
