PAPIER MACHE PLATE
Antique Chinese decorated lacquered footed
Size : Large (11 in)

DESCRIPTION:
Antique Chinese Lacquer Hand Painted Gilt Plate
With The Chinese & Geisha Scene 19C.
The hand painted scene was a snapshot of the Chinese royal or
prominent class people’s luxury lifestyle that filled with appreciation of geisha, painting, art, tree arrangements.
This is a rather rare and unusual lacquered papier mâché plate,
exported from China to Europe in the mid 19th century.
It is quite a large plate - nearly 28cm or 11inch in diameter.
It has a nice barbed shape and has a foot beneath.
The main lacquer color, both above and below, is black.
The top of the plate is extensively and finely decorated in other lacquer colors, which now present as mid browns, cream and gilt.
The decoration is very careful and detailed.

CONDITION:
The condition is pretty good for the age.
There are some chips around the plate edges and the lacquer has to some.
However, the lacquer has degraded somewhat over the long life of this plate.
A very fine craquelure has developed on the upper surface and the lacquer colors have faded and
 lost much of their gloss.
However, it is still a lovely thing.
