Hand Carved Floral Design Wooden Pot with Lid, 16x11cm (N)T2.

Indonesian Hand Carved Pot with Lid

The tradition of woodcarving in Bali goes back many centuries. Carvings were originally produced to adorn temples and for the palaces of the island's rulers. Nowadays carving has become a full-time occupation supplying a global market but the sublime skills passed down from generation to generation in a dozen or so "woodcarving villages" remain essentially the same. Children in woodcarving families start to absorb them from an early age as they sit on parents and siblings laps as they carve. By the time they start school most of them will already have started carving. It is this long unbroken family tradition that has made Bali the woodcarving capital of the world.
