Drysdale AC won the prestigious Wynne Prize for Sofala in 1947, and represented Australia at the Venice Biennale in 1954. He was influenced by abstract and surrealist art, and "created a new vision of the Australian scene as revolutionary and influential as that of Tom Roberts". Drysdale holds the record for the fifth most expensive Australian painting ever sold; "Grandma's Sunday Walk" (1972) sold for $3million in 2017, and is one of Australia's most collectable and sought after artists. The subject of Man with Snake is Drysdale's friend, Eric Worrell, a naturalist, herpetologist and writer whose collection of snake venom was essential in the production of snake anti-venom in Australia. He was founder of the Australian Reptile Park in Gosford, NSW Drysdale only made 6 lithographs in his career. The first one was Kimberley Landscape 1964 and was commissioned by the Art Gallery Society of the National Gallery of Victoria. This important lithograph, limited to an edition of 75, comes from a private collection in Bowral, and has been in the same family for over 50 years. It was originally purchased in the late 1960s, spending the majority of it's life in London.
