Union Pacific 4023 is a preserved member of the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy class built by the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, New York in November 1944.
It is one of eight surviving UP Big Boys[1] being preserved across the United States,
and the only surviving Big Boy that was part of the second group of locomotives built in 1944.
All of the other surviving Big Boys were from the first group built in 1941.
In Spring of 2005, No. 4023 was moved by truck on a highway to a more permanent home at the new location of Kenefick Park
alongside an EMD DDA40X No. 6900.
As of 2022, No. 4023 is still on display at Kenefick.
When UP design specifications were complete,
it was decided on the use of a simple articulated, high speed, 132 ft.
long locomotive sporting sixteen 68 diameter drive wheels.
What they created was the longest and among the heaviest, most powerful steam locomotive legends in the world.
And had not the worker at ALCO chalked Big Boy on the side of the smoke box of one of the 4-8-8-4s under construction,
a name that immediately caught on,
it is rumored that the name of the type would have been Wasatch, for the mountains they were built to conquer.
Several examples remain in museums around the country but silently they sit as a visual echo to the thunder that once made them revered
throughout the landscape that the Big Boys dominated.
