WEIGHT-270gr

Afonso was the second son of Queen Isabel. He had a sister, born a year earlier, Constança who married the King of Castile, Ferdinand IV. In 1309, D. Afonso IV married Infanta Beatriz, daughter of King Sancho IV of Castile, this son of Alfonso X, the Wise who was the maternal grandfather of King Dinis, father of Afonso IV; as such, the bride and groom are cousins. From this marriage stand out Maria de Portugal and Pedro I. This marriage and that of his sister were foreseen with the Treaty of Alcanizes. Despite being the legitimate son of his father D. Dinis, D. Afonso would not be, according to some sources, the favorite of King D. Dinis, who preferred the company of D. Afonso Sanches, one of his (legitimate) bastards. This preference gave rise to a rivalry between the two brothers, leading the future king to rebel against his father, with civil war in 1320.[1] In addition to that half-brother, there were also João Afonso and Fernão Sanches, other sons of Dinis. On the side of the future king were his mother, some great nobles, many second sons and the bishops of Porto and Lisbon. King Dinis had three bastard children, some nobles and military orders. Peace was made with the intervention of Queen Isabel, after the battle of Alvalade and four years of war. After the peace was signed on February 26, 1324, Afonso Sanches was dismissed and removed from the court and the future king was assured of the throne.[2] In 1325, Afonso IV became king and as the first decision, after courts in Évora, he declared Afonso Sanches a traitor,[3] he was already in Castile, withdrawing all the lands, titles and fiefs granted to him by their father. [4] He did the same to João Afonso who was executed.[3] The exile did not conform and across the border orchestrated a series of political and military maneuvers with the aim of becoming king himself. After several failed invasion attempts, the brothers signed a peace treaty, under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth.[5] He lies in the Lisbon Cathedral, next to D. Beatriz, his queen and consort.
