ANDREW JACKSON ACHIEVED THE GREATEST AMERICAN VICTORY OF THE WAR OF 1812 AT THE BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS AND WOULD BECOME THE 7TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. HERE HE SIGNS A PARTLY PRINTED DOCUMENT, AS PRESIDENT, THAT IS ALSO COUNTERSIGNED BY SECRETARY OF WAR, JOHN HENRY EATON, WHO SERVED AS AN AIDE TO JACKSON IN THE MILITIA, AS A MAJOR, DURING THE WAR OF 1812, AND TOOK PART IN ALL OF JACKSON’S MAJOR CAMPAIGNS, INCLUDING THE BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS. EATON WOULD LATER BECOME THE YOUNGEST U. S. SENATOR IN HISTORY, CONTINUE SUPPORTING THE POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS OF ANDREW JACKSON, AND FOLLOWING JACKSON’S ELECTION TO THE PRESIDENCY HE WOULD JOIN THE CABINET AS SECRETARY OF WAR. EATON AND HIS WIFE BECAME THE FOCUS OF CONTROVERSY IN THE “PETTICOAT AFFAIR” AND EATON RESIGNED HIS CABINET POST AND WAS LATER APPOINTED AS GOVERNOR OF FLORIDA TERRITORY. THEY HERE APPOINT A VETERAN OF THE WAR OF 1812, FAMED AMERICAN SILVERSMITH, SERAPHIM MASI, WHO DESIGNED THE SECOND TREATY SEAL OF THE UNITED STATES, AS AN OFFICER IN THE MILITIA OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. JUST A FEW WEEKS AFTER THE DATE OF THIS DOCUMENT JACKSON WOULD GET CONGRESS TO PASS HIS MOST CONTROVERSAL PIECE OF LEGISLATION, THE “INDIAN REMOVAL ACT”, WHICH FORCED 18 INDIAN TRIBES TO MOVE WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI.

ANDREW JACKSON (1767-1845) SIGNED DOCUMENT, “Andrew Jackson” and also signed Secretary of War, JOHN HENRY EATON (1790-1856), “J. H. Eaton”, 16 x 10.25, 26 February 1830, appointing American silversmith, active in Washington, D.C., who also served in the War of 1812, Seraphim Masi (1797-1884) as First Lieutenant in the Militia of the District of Columbia (much like our National Guard). Masi is best known for creating the second Treaty Seal of the United States in 1825. It was used for making red-wax pendant seals for treaties until 1871. This is a rare historical find with bold signatures by both Jackson and Eaton and a wonderful association with a well-known American silversmith. It comes attractively housed in a custom designed, 11 x 17.25, protective clamshell case with gold embossed “Andrew Jackson”. It is in good condition, with some fold separations reinforced with archival tape on the reverse, a few small chips along the edge and on fold lines.   #12968ZERL
