DESCRIPTION:     Boatswain or Rigger proficiency badge, a relatively hard to find proficiency badge, this is the first one I have ever owned

I have printed the Rules for this skill below, from my quick review one can understand why very few Scouts would have earned this badge

-from our research I think that this skill had two different names, Boatswain and Rigger

Style Variation:         black back, ribbon, bound (black back style variation is thought to have been produced in the late 1940’s and into the early 1950’s) 

Size:                          1 1/2 inches or 38 mm in diameter, I have noticed that these badges may have come in more than one size, this badge is the larger such version at 38 mm

CONDITION:            New Like (the colour and images on this badge remain very strong and vibrant, see images for greater detail)

Section 65 – RIGGER (also known as Boatswain)

(a)   Know the different kinds of canvases, be able to use a palm and need and make a cringle, and sew a round and flat seam and herringbone, and make small repairs to sails.

(b)   Be able to splice hemp and wire and make fenders, mats, and lead and log lines.

(c)   Know the different strains and stresses of hemp and wire rope, the use of the jack, and be able to spin yarn and make two kinds of sennit.
