Aesop's Fables: “A New Translation by VS Vernon Jones with an Introduction By CK Chesterton and Illustrations by Arthur Rackham.” This hardcover first American edition of Aesop's fables was published in New York and printed in England, and is in very good condition especially being over 110 years old. The black lettering on the front cover and spine are embossed; and a black embossed border on the front surrounds a mounted color illustration which has a few scratches. The green cloth covering the boards and spine shows minor wear on all edges and folds. The spine has yellowed and discolored a bit. The cover corners have been bumped and board tips are a bit exposed. The head and tail caps of the spine are rubbed and slightly frayed. This book is solid although the covers, especially the front, have begun to separate from the text and roll, as shown in photos. The pictorial designs on the cover side of the front end-papers are covered by an owner’s label, and at the back, the loose end-paper is stained.  There are 224 pages following xxix;  within the text are 12 color illustrations plus the frontispiece, all protected with tissue, and over 150 drawings in black and white.  The pages are generally very clean and none seem to be loose or missing, but there are some handling marks.  The photos show the two pages with pencil scribbles, as well as the more obvious smudges or small tears. The edges of the pages are tanned.  I have tried to clearly and accurately describe the condition, and show all blemishes in my photos, which are considered to be part of the description. This book has been in a smoke-free, pet-free home since 1995.
