●This is Japanese Tea Bowl Made by Shunji Kato Made in Japan.
●Shunji Kato, a potter and holder of Aichi Prefecture's intangible cultural properties, died of old age on February 15 at his home in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture.
He was 87 years old. On February 11, 1892 (Meiji 25), he was born into the family of Aoi Gamoto in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, and engaged in pottery making since childhood.
In 1926, he succeeded Shunji II, and in 1931, he held an exhibition of six works of Seto with Karakuro KATO and others (Tokyo Hoteiya), and in 1934, he held an exhibition of three works with Sakusuke KATO and Karakuro KATO at Hankyu.
In 1940, he was commissioned to create a statue of the Goddess of Mercy to honor the war dead and created 'Koa Kannon' on Mt. Izu in Atami.
After the war, he held a solo exhibition at Matsuzakaya in Nagoya in 1967.
In 1975, he was recognized as a holder of Aichi Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property for his work on Furuseto and Oribe ware.
He also belonged to the Seto Potters Association and served as a counselor and adviser.
He created his own works, focusing on tea earthenware such as koseto glaze, tea bowls with Oribe glaze, water jug and tea container.
