Ask the Wise Fool...
Got a challenging problem? Want some inspiration? Then do what powerful decision makers throughout
history (Chinese rulers, Egyptian pharaohs, Roman emperors, European kings) have done: consult a
Wise Fool. Why? At the royal court, the king's advisors were often "yes-men" who told him exactly
what he wanted to hear—not a good environment to make decisions. To counter this, the king gave his
Wise Fool a penalty-free "license" to make offbeat observations about any proposal under discussion.
His job was to take a whack at the rules and assumptions that kept his king mired in conventional
thinking. By listening to the Wise Fool, the king stimulated his creativity, and protected himself
from groupthink. Who can you consult to get a very different point of view?
