Rare INSTRUCTORS Boy Scout STETSON Hat PLUME Hackle Brush Role Identification White Bristles

DESCRIPTION:   Boy Scout Troop INSTRUCTORS or Trainers Stetson (Lemon Squeezer) Hat Plume, distinctive long white bristles, cotter pin attachment holder, with long cotter pin

-the Instructors plume was apparently only in use for a very limited number of years, it is my understanding that this plume was used in the 1912 to 1921 period but if anyone has more detailed information please let me know and I will add it to this listing

-I normally do not add the term RARE to my auction listings but felt it appropriate in this case

-this is the only one I have ever owned, apparently one was sold in recent years on eBay for a relatively high price (over GBP £1000 / $10,200 HKD / $1300 US /  $1700 Canadian) and I recently heard of a private sale as well for £750, in any event a valuable and hard to find plume in the eyes of some Scout collectors

OTHER NOTES:

-many names were used to describe the hat badge over the years including BRUSHES, HACKLES and PLUMES, the latter perhaps the most commonly known or used

-leaders, and other adults playing different roles within the Boy Scout organization, used the hat plume as a means of quickly identifying their role or position, the GREEN plume was main leader with the Troop or Pack and the RED plume was for the assistant leaders

-similarly, a District Scout Leader would have a plume with WHITE bristles, the District Commissioners’ plume would have PURPLE bristles & so on. 

-the plume holder design and text also varied from one section on to another, the Troop level had the classic fleur de lis design (BE PREPARED), the Wolf Cub design featured the Wolf (DO YOUR BEST or BOY SCOUTS) and Rovers also used the fleur de lis design but with RS on it (SERVICE, BE PREPARED or BOY SCOUTS),

-the variations are multiplied even further as some designs had NO stars in the fleur de lis, were produced in sterling, EPNS or other metals, had a variety of manufacturer marks on the reverse, had a variety of plume bristles from horse to nylon or had one of a multitude of holder designs 

-plumes were attached to the hat with a cotter pin or some later styles had a clip design
