The steel grade 1.4404 is a rust-proof, acid-resistant steel that is easy to process. The steel has improved machinability and is suitable for the production of corrosion-resistant products by machining. 1.4404 has very good corrosion resistance, which makes it suitable for use in many areas. The addition of molybdenum provides improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments. It is not magnetic, but can become slightly magnetic after cold working and welding.
Stainless steel sheet strips 1.4404 have good oxidation resistance with a temperature of 870 °C.
The material 1.4404 can be easily welded using a wide range of conventional welding processes. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but it can be hardened by cold working.
The material 1.4404 is usually heated slowly to 1150 °C. The temperature range for forging is 900 °C. If no bending is expected, the material is cooled in water to avoid undesirable phases that reduce corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Tarnish and scale layers reduce corrosion resistance and must be removed by pickling or other suitable processes.
