ITEM IS SOLD AS IS AND PRICED TO SELL! ALSO SEE OTHER THORENS KITS IN MY ITEMS FOR SALE!
This kit resolves the usual problems of hearing a "pop" upon switching on, record spinning in opposite direction and motor vibrations due to out of spec electronic components. For completeness sake the 3 electrolytic capacitors on the PCB board are also supplied with this kit. Good practices dictate that these old capacitors should be replaced. The other capacitors present in the Turntable are not supplied because advanced test equipment may be required to adjust for proper functionality!
Basic maintenance of the tonearm cue lift is also recommended and a 2ml Silicone Oil syringe can be ordered from my store! Cleaning the cue lift mechanism and replacing the Silicone Oil will cause the stylus to drop slowly and gently on to the vinyl record.
This is a popular kit (because of price, comparatively) but you need to read the description to understand why it is more expensive and justified and others have used it with great success! Thorens used the more expensive German made MKT 1813 phase change capacitors for a reason, so why change one of the most crucial electronic components that turn the record in the correct direction and reduce motor vibration for much cheaper substitutes? And one may argue that any disk capacitor will fit the bill for spark suppressor use across the switch, but a Class Y capacitor is designed to fail in open circuit mode so your turntable motor will not start to run unattended. I have based my kits on such high levels of reliability, functionality and safety!
This kit is generally used for both 220 Volts as well as 110 Volts AC Mains Voltage as required for the pcb board operation. The arrangement in your Thorens may be different, so if in doubt send me the photos. DO NOT MESS WITH TRIMMER POTENTIOMETER NOR THE COIL!!!
This kit is for a basic refurbishment that does not require more than simple basic skills which include: Unplugging the equipment from electrical outlet before opening it and whilst working on it, the 3 electrolytic capacitors have polarity (+ and -) so please pay attention to that.
Free shipping by registered mail is included in the price!
Very
important information before you start: Do not try to unsolder the old parts because you will most likely damage the plastic tag board….just snip the old components off with a wire cutter and solder the new parts on top. It is a
well documented fact that people have damaged tag boards and transformer
windings by applying too much heat in an attempt to remove old components in
vintage equipment. Also, you must use solder that contains lead otherwise the
solder joints will NOT bond with the old solder! However, it is safe to desolder these components when they are on a PCB board!
The photos showing turntable parts is for illustration purposes only, as
you will only get the correct 6 capacitors and 1 resistor!
Also, check my other capacitor and resistor
kits for refurbishment or repair of the QUAD amplifier and THORENS turntables..
Important information component values:
C100: One Spark or Arc suppression capacitor 0.010uF in other words 10nF Metallized Paper Safety capacitor 300VAC for replacing capacitor of identical value. It is a Y Class suitable for use in the mains voltage line circuit across the switch and would fail in open circuit mode, without causing the motor to run unattended! If and when the old capacitor fails, a popping noise can be heard upon switching on! This capacitor should solve the problem of loud popping noise upon switch on! The Class Y capacitor normally fails in open circuit mode, therefore it will not bypass the switch and start the motor!
