World War II (1939-1945) resulted in shortage
of metals. The princely states could not keep up with the demand for coins. To
offset the coin shortage, several princely states issued “cash coupons” as a
substitute. The princely states sought permission from the British to issue
cash coupons but their requests were declined; yet they issued cash coupons.
Most of the cash coupons issued were impressions of the revenue stamps on
cardboard – some of them had serial numbers while others did not. In some
cases, the cash coupons were issued through the state’s treasury and bear the
signature of their treasurer. However, there were many cash coupons that were
issued without signatures or serial numbers. Issued in small quantities for a
brief period. Now extremely rare.
Cash Coupons are known to have been issued by the following
states of Pre-Partition India:

MANGROL, MENGANI, MULI, MORVI, NAWANAGAR, NAWALGARH, PALITANA, PORBANDAR,
RAJKOT, SAILANA, SAYLA, SITAMAU, TONK, VITHALGADH.
