SOME KNOWLEDGE ON CASH COUPONS OF INDIA

World War II (1939-1945) resulted in shortage of metals. The princely states could not keep up with the demand for coins. To offset the coin shortage, several princely states issued “cash coupons” as a substitute. The princely states sought permission from the British to issue cash coupons but their requests were declined; yet they issued cash coupons. Most of the cash coupons issued were impressions of the revenue stamps on cardboard – some of them had serial numbers while others did not. In some cases, the cash coupons were issued through the state’s treasury and bear the signature of their treasurer. However, there were many cash coupons that were issued without signatures or serial numbers. Issued in small quantities for a brief period. Now extremely rare.

Cash Coupons are known to have been issued by the following states of Pre-Partition India:

AMBALIARA, BAJANA, BALVAN, BAMRA, BANTWA/BARAMAJMU, BIKANER, BILKHA, BUNDI, CHUDA, DEWAS JUNIOR, DEWAS SENIOR, DHAR, DHROL, DINAJPUR, GONDAL, INDERGADH, JAISALMER, JAORA, JASDAN, JUNAGADH, KALAT, KHADAL, KHAIRPUR, KUTCH, MANGROL, MENGANI, MULI, MORVI, NAWANAGAR, NAWALGARH, PALITANA, PORBANDAR, RAJKOT, SAILANA, SAYLA, SITAMAU, TONK, VITHALGADH.
