Universal marking gauge

If you are one of those craftsmen that have tools in your tool cabinet like Lie Nielsen, Veritas, Starrett or perhaps some hand forged Japanese saws and chisels, then this marking gauge is one more unique tool for your collection. This is the ideal tool for woodworkers and luthiers, but it can be used as well by jewelers, machinists and many other craftsmen.

The marking gauge is made from tool steel, stainless steel, Damascus steel and brass. In particular the body of the gauge is made from tool steel (case hardened) and inside the body there is a threaded phosphor bronze bushing; both materials offer wear resistance for long service life. The body is decorated with Damascus steel (pattern: twist)

The shaft is made from stainless steel and it is threaded on both ends; one end takes the disc cutter, the other end takes the brass stopper and it locks the carbide marking rod (locking the carbide rod can be done either by using the brass stopper or the longer brass handle supplied with the set).

The Universal marking gauge is a multifunctional tool and it can be used to

·       Mark straight lines on soft or hard wood by using the cutting disc; reverse the stainless steel shaft and use the carbide rod to mark straight lines on hard wood, melamine, laminated boards, hard plastics and metals. With the disc cutter it can mark from 1.0 up to 180mm, with the carbide rod it can mark from 1.0 up to 170mm

·      Convert the gauge to a compass for marking circles and arcs, by inserting the carbide pointing tip to the hole that is located on the flat surface at the down end of the round fence of the gauge body. Using it as compass you can mark circles effectively from 25 up to 340mm, if you use the brass pad to mark a circle it can be from 55 up to 340mm

The body of the marking gauge has an extra feature. Right beneath the knurled brass thumb screw there is a plastic set screw; by adjusting this screw you can control the friction applied of the shaft.

The Universal marking gauge comes with 2 cutting discs (from reputable supplier) for wood marking, 2 interchangeable carbide rods and 2 interchangeable carbide pointing tips. The set also contains a brass-plastic pad for setting the gauge to mark circles and arcs, a brass handle, a small bottle for oil, wrenches and all the necessary replaceable parts.

The case is made from solid Niangon wood, Wenge and plywood. The lid of the case outside is dressed with black leather. The case inside is dressed with red velvet paper.

Useful tips

Before using the tool it will be wise to lubricate the shaft and the bronze bushing with a couple of drops of oil, this will enhance the movement and minimize the friction. The phosphor bushing is accurate within +0.005mm, with proper lubrication it will have long service life before you need to replace it with the spare bushing supplied with the set.

The knurled thumb screw locks the stainless shaft effectively with very little force from your fingers; in conjunction with the friction adjusting screw the force needed from your fingers will be minimal.

The HSS cutting disc can mark easily soft and hard wood; for better results you can polish it with a honing stone.

If you need to re-sharpen the carbide rods, use a silicon carbide or a diamond wheel in your bench grinder.

To lock the brass handle and the brass stopper, finger tightness offers a good grip; if you want a more secure grip use the 2.0mm Allen wrench, but you don't need to over tighten.

To adjust and lock the carbide pointing tip use the 1.5mm Allen wrench; the length of the tip has been adjusted so that when you insert it all the way down into the hole and then use it with the brass pad to mark a circle its pointer tip will not leave a mark on the center of the surface.

On the center of the brass pad there is a press fit piece of Acetal; Acetal has anti friction properties and enhances the rotation of the gauge. The base of the pad is lined with rubber for better adhesion on slippery surfaces.

Remember that the body of the gauge is steel; although it's hardened it can get oxidized, so when is not in use apply a thin coat of lubricant.
