| Synopsis: | Atlantics: Directed by Mati Diop (35 rhums), Atlantiques recounts the odyssey of Senegalese friends who attempt a life-threatening boat crossing. Melancholic and mysterious, the film urgently and elegantly addresses the perils of illegal migration. Despair: The individual seems to go under desperately in a lost battle with almighty nature. Only assimilation still seems to offe salvation. A dark choreography. Condolences: Burial Rites become the mise-en scene in which politicians, the media, a monk and an infuriated neighbour vividly portray the aftermath of an accident. Joy: A police officer, coordinating the reconstruction of the last known movements of a young girl who has gone missing, speculates on what might have happened to her. The Flag: The Flag is the second part of Kken Ergun's series about the state-controlled national day ceremonies of the Turkish Republic.Hinterland: A young woman goes for a mountain walk with her two little sons. The eldest, not yet quite adolescent but already wilful, finds a wounded horse. He doesn't want the animal to suffer any more. The mother wants nothing to do with it. Beautifully shot, attractive mid-length short shot in beautiful nature about a rite of passage. Watching the Sky: Seven years of celestial field recordings gathered from the chaos of the cosmos and inscribed onto 16mm film from various locations upon this turning tripod Earth. Amin: An Algerian is driving with his little son through Paris. He is stopped by the police, apparently because his headlamp is broken. The policemen start badgering him, the tension rises, until an outburst comes from an unexpected corner. Amin is a sensitive drama about injustice and power relationships, not just between authorities and individuals, but also between father and son. As I Lay Dying: A boy comes home one afternoon rain-soaked. He has fever later in the day and thinks he is going to die. Video Game: A complex video journey on a motorcar, that incorporates mythic themes of searching, the need for being, for love, for a home and for a promise of a different future. Interlude: A group of 'Look Downs' (fish) swim though chemical layers of high-contrast black-and white film stock. Nuuk: Kner uses sequences of images from webcams as raw material. People and their vehicles appear acoustically, but not visually. The shift from day to night and the influence of the weather gives motion to the segments. He condenses a total of 3,000 individual web images taken from the Internet into one scene. Despite the cinematic motion of the image, it seems like a still photo. Veere: In Veere in Zeeland, the boundary is sought of visual darkness. Who I Am and What I Want: Who I Am And What I Want is a 7 minute animated short directed by Chris Shepherd and David Shrigley in 2005. Based on the David Shrigley book of the same title. Kevin Eldon voices the role of the film's main character, Pete. Meander: On a hot summer day, five adolescents try to cool down by a river. We observe the behaviour of the group, their glances, lingering and messing. The delightful, listless peace is in danger of being disrupted. An atmospheric, short film without dialogue.
