VACCINATION

SLAVERY

Smallpox

Cowpox

Plague

1803

"...he had observed that vaccinated people were not attacked by the plague...several people had observed the same and many vaccinated themselves as a security against the plague...Of 6000 vaccinated at Constantinople, not one has taken the plague. That infants previously vaccinated have sucked without injury the milk of nurses infected with the plague...".

"...And what else can be expected, when he knows that he himself is the property of one man, his wife perhaps of another, and his children liable to be given to a third or fourth? It is slavery - it is slavery in all its stages and all its shapes which depraves the mind and debases human nature...."

London, 1803. Full year, complete, with two title pages and many engravings, thick volume, original leather spine and marbled boards, handsome leather spine label, binding worn and rubbed but holding steady. Much in the way of historic content including a lengthy take on slavery, vaccinations, Dr. Jenner, smallpox, cowpox - a preventative of the Plague, Atrocity of Fur Trader, Jamaica, Jerusalem, Account of Slaves at the Cape of Good Hope, Sphinx, Hudson's Bay Company, Erasmus Darwin (grandfather of Charles Darwin), Indian tribes, Cornplanter, Thomas Jefferson, Pre- Lousiana Purchase remarks,  The Jews Citadel, birds, Cairo, Cape Town, Ceylon, &c. &c. pages age-toned and some staining but all easily read and turned. The slavery content - sympathetic and abhorrent simultaneously  - goes on for many pages. Scarce volume.
