Within this series, Shatha delves into the issues she has personally experienced and observed throughout her life in Yemen, with a specific focus on the past seven years since the outbreak of the ongoing war. Her aim is to shed light on the lives of Yemeni families enduring the war, showcasing their resilience and their relentless pursuit of basic necessities such as food, water, electricity, fuel, and security. Through her artwork, she skill-fully captures the conflicting emotions of strength and fear that Yemeni families grapple with on a daily basis.Family No.3 was one of the artworks that won the prestigious John Byrne Award. The judges were deeply moved by Shatha's powerful artistic expression, praising the stark composition and restrained approach in her paintings, as well as the honesty and sincerity conveyed in her accompanying statement. As a result, she was unanimously chosen by the four-judge panel

About the Artist:

Shatha Altowai is a multi-award-winning Yemeni visual artist based in Edinburgh. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology with Honors from the University of Utara Malaysia in 2014 in Sana’a, Yemen. A self-taught artist, she embarked on her artistic journey in 2014 amidst the ongoing civil war in Yemen. Much of her work reflects various aspects of life in her society, particularly women's issues and the suffering caused by the conflict.

Shatha has been involved in various cultural and artistic projects, including the creation of a short play, "Saber Came to Tea," with Art27scotland, which premiered in October 2021 and was performed again at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2022. She is also a member of the Mutual Affinities pilot program (since June 2022), supported by Creative Scotland. Additionally, she is an alumna of the Women in Conflict "Beyond Borders Fellowship" (August 2022).

She has received numerous awards for her art activism, including the IIE-Artist Protection Fund Fellowship (APF), hosted at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) within the University of Edinburgh from 2020 to 2021, and the first prize of The John Byrne Award (1st quarter, April 2021).

With less than 2 years of involvement in Scotland's arts and culture sphere, Shatha received the Scottish Women's Award in October 2022 in recognition of her contributions to culture and the arts. Shatha is currently working as a freelance artist.
