An antique Bamileke or Bamum ethnic African statue of wood, canvas, clay and beads.

The Bamileke  and Bamum peoples came from what is now known as Cameroon.

This male fertility statue is a carved wood figure which is them covered in a clay soaked canvas. Strings of beads are then pushed into the wet canvas as decoration. Whilst the figure will stand up on it's own, it hasn't great balance and it comes with a stand to provide better support.

It has suffered some damage over the years with a section of canvas/beads missing on the right arm from the elbow to the hand which has exposed the wood, (see final photo). Some bead strings are loose or beads missing.

Statue stands approx. 50 cm in height, with a width of 16 cm, weight - 3 kg.
