The “Sunday Mainichi”
was one of the first weekly magazines in Japan; published by a newspaper, it
was started in 1922, the same time as its rival at the Asahi newspaper.
It was a large format pictorial magazine with a popular culture emphasis. The
following 15 issues of the magazine, from 1928 to
1935, are offered as one lot. Owing to rotogravure printing and
inexpensive paper as was suitable for a popular-readership weekly,
a degre of care is needed today in using these, but they are
basically intact and not damaged. Staples have rested and have been lost, but
these magazines are stil complete and have not been clipped. They provide
insight regarding Japan in the late Twenties and early Thirties. Page size 10.5
x 15 inches; in later years the page size was reduced while more pages were
added.
Cover stories in the
provided issues include The World of Laughter, Truth and Fiction of
the Ocean, Opinion on Promulgation of the Constitution, The Short Hair Issue in
Paris, prizewinnng popular-taste novels, The Fuji Murder Case, the Far East
Olympics, prize-winning drama script “Shanghai,” Chat Over Tea, Record of the
