Gathered on the Edge is a delightful CD from Beasts of Paradise. There are five members of this band, but the focal point is Eda Maxym, a torch singer with tremendous range and versatility. Her emotional outbursts and warm style -- both casual and focused -- captivate listeners. While Maxym's vocals steal the show, the eclectic instrumental accompaniment is important. Geoffrey Gordon is on percussion, Barbara Imhoff on harp and marimba, Nancy Kaspar on double bass, and Stephen Kent on didgeridoo. The esoteric sounds are world fusion with ambient textures and timbres. There are vague echoes of rock & roll as well. However, it always comes back to Maxym's vocal skills, which are considerable and powerful. ~ Jim Brenholts
