'First seen in Paris in 1841, 'Giselle' - with its arch-Romantic story, technically and emotionally demanding roles for the prima ballerina and for Duke Albrecht, and its elegant, highly melodic score - set a precedent for later ballets and remains a touchstone of the repertoire. 'Le Corsaire', inspired by Byron and premiered in 1856, was Adam's last ballet, while 'La Bayadère', set exotically in the Himalayas, was written for St Petersburg by Austrian-born Ludwig Minkus'
