Nov. 24, 1983 : « I will come back to Paris on January. I would like to spend several nights at your place, until I can find a room. I plan to stay in Europe until March 15. My tour begins Feb. 1984. So I have time to do some drawings. »

Jan. 30, 1985 : « I’m back in Northampton. Things went so well in Switzerland I was able to make a solo record. It will come out on a new label in the spring. »

Feb. 28, 1985 : « I’ve been performing steady since I returned. I played at Syracuse University last Sunday with Archie Shepp and Jaky Byard, piano. »

May, 5, 1983 : « My show sold out. I made some $. Now I have a new saxophone. Life is strange. I’m paying my rent and bying instruments with $ I made selling drawings. (…) I’m playing the piano more and better than ever. I play almost every day, and feel like I’m a new man, younger at 50. Its great. »

Dec. 30, 1985 : « I recorded an album with Mal Waldron for Freelance Records. I hope that you’re going to like it, and will hear some of the ‘new magic’. (…) No problems. I eat well every day. I sleep better than in Massachusetts or Europe. Really. I get up at 9:00 am, instead of 6/7:00 am. I feel more rested. »

May. 18, 1985 : « My son Djinji is a very good musician, he is absolutely talented. He works with a rapper named Supernatural, he plays the synthesizer. He makes it sound like a complete orchestra. »

Initié dans son enfance à la clarinette et aux saxophones alto et baryton, auteur d’une quarantaine d’albums en tant que leader au saxophone et au piano (chez Impulse, ESP, Fontana, Arista, ECM, Polydor etc.), accompagnateur de Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, Mal Waldron, Chick Corea, John Coltrane (Ascension, Impulse, 1965) et Archie Shepp (Fire Music, id.), Marion Brown (Atlanta, Georgie, 1931 – Hollywood, Floride, 2010) fut aussi peintre et professeur d’ethnomusicologie au début des années 70.
