This is a newly made Ao Naga woman’s shawl in an original design from the village of Changki, part of a set that would have included a blue skirt with red patches. The background is white, with a slight gray tint, and the cross hatching is black. It is an article of clothing still being worn, and one of few still handwoven with cotton, as opposed to the synthetic Thai cotton and acrylic used in most of the cloths now being made in Nagaland and in the neighboring Chin area of Burma. The simple check pattern speaks to the common, daily nature of the cloth in the Ao area, although it is very unusual compared to most Naga tribal textile designs, which, although geometric, are usually more elaborate and more colorful.

The cloth is 67” long, with 1 ½” of tassels at each end, and is 19” wide, so roughly the same length and twice the width of the smaller version also listed. There are several in my stock and although the dimensions might be slightly different, the design will be consistent.
