Scharmach was Paikowski's niece and graduated from the Marquette University College of Nursing. After working as a nurse in Milwaukee for a few years, Scharmach volunteered for active duty in the Army Nurse Corps and was commissioned a first lieutenant. During the Korean war she was stationed in Germany for three years. Scharmach earned several honors and awards during her nursing career in the Cold War Era. WorldCat shows 7 copies held by institutions, no records in ABPC (as of July 24 2017). A scarce personal account of action by a medic in World War I. Very near Fine / Very Good+.
