Your wiper arms are operated via a linkage through your wiper motor. This motor is what makes the wipers move when you engage the Wiper Stalk.

Over time due to overuse and general wear and tear, the inner gears often begin to fade causing the wipers to not work systematically in the correct routine. This can often be seen when one wiper blade moves slower than the other causing them to slightly catch on one another.

If left too long this can potentially cause the wipers not to move at all, which will result in an instant MOT failure due to it being a safety hazard.
