Preparation

Just like any other DIY project, you need to suitably prepare the surface before you paint it.
This paint isn’t suitable for rough sawn fences and sheds – check out our fence and sheds paint for that.

How to prepare bare wood for painting:

  • Use 120 grit sandpaper to lightly sand your wood for an even finish.
  • Sand in the direction of the grain.
  • Once the dust has settled, wipe the area with white spirit.
  • Any holes or cracks can be filled in with wood filler.
  • You should also stop knots showing through your new paint job with knot blocker.
  • How to prepare previously painted wood

The type of sandpaper you need to use depends on the quality of your paint. If your old paint isn’t flaking and is still in a good condition, use 240 grit sandpaper and just lightly sand the surface. If the paint is cracked or flaking, use 120 grit sandpaper.
Sand flaking paint back to the bare wood. This is easiest to do with an electric sander. Once the dust has settled, wipe it away with white spirit and a damp cloth. Fill any holes or cracks with wood filler and prevent knots from darkening with knot blocker.

Application

Give your paint a thorough stir to mix the colour pigments. Make sure you get rid of any lumps and bumps.
Apply the paint in the direction of the woodgrain with a synthetic brush. Leave your first coat to dry for four hours.
Apply the second coat. If you’re painting bare wood, you might still be able to see the grain after two coats. If that’s the case, wait four hours before applying a third coat.
Your last coat will be weatherproof in one hour. And that’s it, job done!

Aftercare

Cleaning:
Once your weatherproof paint has dried, you can clean as normal with warm, soapy water or a diluted all-purpose cleaning solution.

Repair

Repairing a damaged patch of paint it easy. All you need to do is lightly sand it until it’s smooth and then add a coat or two until you’ve repaired it. Easy!
