The item for sale is a remarkably detailed carving of an adult foo dog and her pup that was carved out of box wood in China around the year 1900.  The item appears to be to be carved from a single piece of wood.  The smaller dog is perched on a ball.  The larger dog has a tail that splits into six different segments.  The dogs have glass eyes and inlaid teeth, although one eye is missing on the larger dog.  The fur on the dogs is intricately carved.  The modeling of the dogs is expressive and dynamic.  The form of this dog figurine was very popular during its time of production and examples exist with varying levels carving expertise.  The carving on this example is better than most. The larger dog in the carving is missing an eye.  There are two breaks in the small dog's front legs and one break in the large dog's tail extension.  These are the result of shrinkage of the wood from drying out and occur normally.  These are often filled in.  These are featured in the fifth, fourth and third from last photographs.  The carving probably had a light finish when it has made that has degraded somewhat over time.  Otherwise, there is no damage nor wear.  The figurine has a pleasing appearance despite the minor flaws that are mentioned for accuracy of description.  The length, width and height are 6" x 3" x 4".
