This lot features a rare Italian 800-Silver Pepper Mill, and a Mexican Sterling Silver Salt Cellar.
I
originally listed the pepper mill alone, but what's pepper without
salt! Both pieces are beautiful, and the aesthetics of this pair makes
them a remarkable adornment to an elegant dinner table.
The Pepper MillThe
hallmark on the pepper mill indicates that it was produced in Florence,
Italy in the 1960s or 1970s. The pepper mill is composed of "800
silver", also known as "continental silver", and is 80% pure. The pepper
mills is remarkable for a few reasons:
- The vertical ribbed design of the grinders is unusual, elegant, sturdy, and has a great feel.
- The
body of these grinders is constructed of heavy gauge 800 Silver - NOT
just a thin shell of silver wrapped around a wooden frame, as is so
common with similarly large silver grinders. The grinders have a solid,
hefty feel.
- At 3.75”, the pepper mill is taller and more distinctive than many comparable sterling mills.
The
grinder is in excellent used condition. The steel grinder element is clean and smooth, but slightly
corroded.
The Salt CellarThe salt cellar is a darling
piece, produced by Mexican silversmith Codan. The design is simple, cleanly lined with shiny sky-blue enamel, and in great shape. The
matching spoon is about 2.75" long.
I’m clearing out an accumulation of clutter, including lots of sterling silver. Check out the other stuff I am selling at
