This work went through many editions very quickly, this being the fifth edition.The author moved to Japan in 1873, when he was employed by the Japanese government as an o-yatoi gaikokujin.

Written by Basil Hall Chamberlain, one of the foremost British Japanologists during the last nineteenth century, a Professor of Japanese at the Tokyo Imperial University.
