The  Goldberg Variations,  BWV  988, is a musical composition for  keyboard  by  Johann Sebastian Bach, consisting of an  aria  and a set of 30  variations. First published in 1741, it is named after  Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who may also have been the first performer of the work.

Víkingur Ólafsson is an Icelandic pianist. Víkingur has performed in concerts throughout Europe, Asia, the United States and Canada  and performed as a soloist with ensembless such as the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, Danish State Radio, Turku Philharmonic in Finland  and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Víkingur has received numerous accolades for his piano playing and musical work, including the Icelandic Optimization Award 2009 and the Icelandic Music Prize eight times. In 2014, Víkingur joined the international agency Harrison Parrott, in 2016 he signed a publishing contract with the German label Deutsche Grammophon, and shortly afterwards released her first recording. Víkingur played Edward Grieg's piano concerto  Iceland Symphony Orchestra  under the direction  of Vladimir Ashkenazy  at the opening concert of the Harpa Music Hall in Reykjavik 2011. Víkingur has since performed with Ashkenazy at a concert in Copenhagen  and Birmingham. Víkingur has premiered four Icelandic piano concerts, by Daniel Bjarnason, Hauk Tómasson, Snorri Sigfús Birgisson and Thord Magnússon. Among the foreign composers with whom Víkingur has worked is the American composer Philip Glass at a concerts in Reykjavik, Gothenburg and London. Víkingur has also worked with English composer Mark Simpson.
