- GoodReads:  (translated from French):
Who does Rétif meet when he walks at night near the Tuileries, the Saint-Laurent fair, the Jardin des Plantes, at the Opera ball or in the alleys of the new Palais-Royal ? A Vaporeuse, an abused girl, a lost girl, a shamed girl, a girl buried alive, a man with rabbits, a man who spends nothing, a poster remover, a man escaped torture, a hanged man then broken , butchers, two abbots who fight a duel, a boy meets a girl, time-killers, tomb violators, sweepers, actors, literati and all the “nocturnal incongruities” that offer the slums, alleys, balls, cafes and dungeons of Paris on the eve of the Revolution. The surrealists will remember the Paris of Rétif, which is already that of Nerval and Baudelaire..
