[Incas] Vega, Garcilaso De La, THE ROYAL COMMENTARIES OF PERU, IN TWO PARTS.  London: Miles Flesher for Samuel Heyrick, 1688. Rebacked full speckled calf hardcover, 1st English edition, Folio (12.750x7.750”), Very Good/n.a., [8], 1019, [9] pp.

Two parts within this one volume, part one addressing the Incan societal structure, wars and laws, and part two addressing the Incan civil wars and Spanish conquest of the Incan empire.

Rebacked with original spine laid down by Taurus Book Bindery of Beverly Hills, CA in 1991. Boards show some gentle scratching and wear, with surprisingly light and sporadic foxing/staining throughout the text.  The binding is complete, large, heavy, solid, and tight.

A remarkable specimen this tome, entirely readable should one desire to do so. Vega was the son of an Incan princess and a Spanish Conquistador and thus has amazing insights and understanding of this most pivotal time in Peruvian/Spanish history. This book was printed by Flesher for four different booksellers, possibly giving rise to the differing title pages among the variants, some red and black, some black, some both. This example is lacking the rubricated title page but does have a splendid example of the black issue.

Translated by Paul Rycaut, having a portrait frontispiece of Rycaut, + 10 copper-engraved plates.

The historical significance of this book can hardly be underrated - yet another marvelous and quite distinctive Capture of Tyme!
