As a pair to the iconic and poignant ‘Hand of Africa’, in this piece, ‘Impressions of Africa’, the imprints of the hands of children affected by HIV surround that of Nelson Mandela’s left hand. This significant work signals one of Mr Mandela’s most favoured topics, children and the future. The colours are those of Africa, warm browns and rusts, reminiscent of arid landscapes. This work serves as a reminder to all of us about the importance of looking after the next generations.

Africa has historically had a capacity for suffering which has often seemed almost infinite. Following slavery and colonialism, a new scourge, HIV, is afflicting millions throughout the continent. In the second of these works, the imprints of the hands of children affected by HIV surround that of Nelson Mandela's left hand and this image has a haunting sadness as it reflects Africa's  truly tragic dilemma.

Nelson Mandela's Robben Island cell No 5 has been visited by presidents, prime ministers and VIPs from across the globe including President Obama (2013) and President Clinton (1998). It has become a place of pilgrimage for those who wish to trace the footsteps of a man who dedicated his life to freedom.
